Aberdeenshire Libraries provides you with free access to online resources. You can use most of these resources from home and this requires your library membership number. (ScotlandsPeople incurs a cost but vouchers for discounted access can be purchased from all libraries)

Oxford Dictionary of National Biography – Over 57,000 biographies of notable people who shaped Britain’s past.


Oxford Dictionaries – Online English and foreign language dictionaries, thesauruses and grammar guides.
Oxford English Dictionary – Guide to the meaning, history and pronunciation of over 600,000 words. OED is a definitive record of the English language.

Britannica Online – There are 3 encyclopedias with age appropriate material from child-friendly to adult learning. Search online to access thousands of articles and illustrations.

World Book – Age appropriate online encyclopedias with articles, images, audio and video delivering good quality information.

Family History 

Ancestry – offers genealogical resources including censuses, vital records, immigration records, family histories, military records, court and legal documents. You can access Ancestry Library Edition only in our libraries. It’s not available to access at home.

ScotlandsPeople – Scottish genealogical records. Access is on a pay-per-view basis. Vouchers which give discounted access can be purchased from all libraries.

General Knowledge 

Oxford Reference – Range of Oxford titles includes key titles in Oxford Companions and Oxford Dictionaries series and illustrated natural history titles such as Encyclopedia of Mammals.

Dawson Era – Get access to hundreds of study guides and past papers via our Dawsonera e-book collection. 


Oxford Bibliographies – research guides on British and Irish Literature and Victorian Literature

Newspapers and Journals

Access to Research Over 1.5 million academic articles and research on subjects including art, business, engineering, history, languages, politics and the sciences. Library Access Only.

Newsbank Digital newspaper collection covering local and national newspapers

Fraserburgh Herald Searchable archives of the newspaper from 1884 to 1920.

British Newspaper Archives Digitised historical newspapers including Aberdeen, Banffshire and Stonehaven Journals. You need to register in order to obtain free access. Access in our libraries only 

Scottish Culture

Scran – Access to images, from museums, galleries and archives, on a large range of subjects and in particular Scottish Culture and history.
